Nearby in South Hadley is another well-respected women's college, Mount Holyoke. Other colleges - Amherst College, Hampshire College, and the University of Massachusetts are located in Amherst, just a few miles to the east.
For the outdoor enthusiast there is convenient access to the Norottuck Rail Trail, a bike trail (see map) that crosses the Connecticut River and extends to Amherst, and beyond. The river itself provides a variety of water activities - boating, kayaking and canoeing, swimming and camping. Within two hours drive to the north are excellent downhill ski resorts, with cross country skiing available in greater Northampton itself.
The City has its own municipal airport. Interstate 91 is accessible from three entrance ramps - immediately to the north, east and south of the center of Northampton. New York City, Boston, Hartford, Conn., and the Berkshires are all within driving distance for a day trip. Cape Cod and its beaches and National Seashore are only three hours away by car to the east via I-90, the Massachusetts Turnpike. |
